You may currently be spending your days in a stressful workplace environment. Hitting deadlines and managing expectations can take its toll on anybody, no matter how mentally fit you are for the position. Urgent issues at work are stressful because they hit on the fear of losing our livelihood, which relates to all the things that come with that (family, shelter, food). A well-placed and well-timed issue at work, can put you out of work. Blame can be sent your way undeservedly, and you can be caught up in a storm of trouble.
Knowing how to manage yourself and others when urgent issues arise at work is critical. You need to attain as much control as possible over the situation at hand, and must ensure that its effects do not reach deep into your life. Be in tune with how issues are being played out at work, and be cautious about the potential which they may hold. Strive to put chaos into order while remembering the following.
Trekking Towards a Solution
Make sure to only do or say things that lead towards a solution when tasked with solving issues at work. There is no space or time for commentary, and other irrelevant information. Assign tasks and explain why people should do what you say by connecting everything towards a potential solution. You must be cold in your approach and not reactionary towards the emotions of others. People will be fearful, brash, and emotional. Expect this from them and know that you are amidst a storm. Your job is to be the leader who keeps the ship afloat, and if you show any sign of weakness, the issues at hand will turn into their worst potential.
The Blame Game
In a desperate attempt to save what can ultimately be their livelihood, people will divert responsibility for the issues at arise at a surprising rate. They will put a lot of effort in making sure no blame rests on them in case things play out into the worst possible case scenario. These people have already accepted defeat over the issues at hand, and are forming contingency plans for when things go awry.
Do not participate in the blame game with issues at work. Remember that these people have mentally succumb to the issues which present themselves. If blame is placed on you, analyze if it is truly deserved. Think about the issues at hand objectively and without fear. If you come to the conclusion that you are to blame, it must bring you peace in working towards a solution.
Being responsible for the issues at hand should give you a sense of desperation which does not have space for emotional decision-making. Work towards solving every issue as if your livelihood depends on it, because it very well can. You do not have time to divert blame or imagine worst-case scenarios when you’re working towards the solution.
If blame is placed on you undeservedly and the majority agrees, then you are stuck with the issue until you find a solution to it. You can only voice your innocence when you solve the issues that you’ve been blamed with. If you begin to plead innocence in the face of a jury which believes you to be the perpetrator, you will seem like you’re trying to divert blame. If things play out in you being the one responsible for issues at work, then fix them as if you really are the one who caused them.
After you do, explain exactly why you’re innocent. The fact that you found a solution will make your case much more believable, and people will not assume that you are trying to divert blame as the issue at hand has been mitigated. You are more likely to teach the ones who falsely accused you a lesson if you clean up what they’ve created and rub their noses in the truth.
